The rules state that you can’t save your last ship, without finding your Lost Ship. If you were unable to find your Lost Ship, you won’t earn any Last Ship bonus points and won’t be able to realize certain missions. You end your play after you have rescued all your available ships or when the penultimate player has saved all his/her ships including the Lost Ship (meaning: you are last).
Tip: as long as you have 3 space ships in play, you might still be able to save your Lost Ship. Use the dotted lines to go to another zone. Perhaps you have an Action Cards that makes you move backwards, which might open the opportunity to take a dotted line in a later turn?
The rules state that the game ends after the penultimate player saves his Last Ship. When there are 2 or more players who weren’t able to find their Lost Ship, they both won’t be able to save their Last Ship. As soon as this situation occurs, the game ends immediately after the last player, who was able to find his Lost Ship, rescued his Last Ship.
In a very rare situation it is even possible that no player finds his Lost Ship. As soon as a situation occurs where no player is able to find his Lost Ship, the game ends immediately and VP are counted.
No. The rules state that the game ends after the penultimate player saves his Last Ship and the last player with a space ship on the game board still gets the VP from the Last Ship HUD. However, this only applies to players who found their Lost Ship! The rules state that without your Lost Ship, you can’t save your Last Ship, which implies that you are not eligible for the Last Ship VP.
The idea behind this abrupt game end is to prevent the players that have already finished from waiting until the last player has moved all ships to the center of the board, picking up Action Cards along the way, playing these cards, etcetera.
